Types of Tablet Coating in Pharmaceutical Drug Manufacturing

Tablet Coating is a critical step in drug manufacturing. There are many reasons for tablet coating. One of such reasons is that it helps to protect the drug from environmental conditions. It also helps to improve the taste of medicines, thus, making them easier to take.

Tablet coating is the outer casing of a tablet with a substance/layer. The coverings that are used range from the present polysaccharides and polymer-based coats to the traditional sugar coating. The drug coat type depends on the tablet's target consumer to the tablet's function.

At Abbvie, we offer potent drug contract manufacturing capabilities. We process over a million vials annually with an automated filling line. Your drug product’s fill and finish procedures can be suited with customized packaging and labeling.

The Major Types of Tablet Coatings

Here are the major types of tablet coatings used in drug manufacturing:

1. Gelatin Coated Tablets

If you have ever had Jell-O, that is gelatin! This type of protein is obtained from the partial hydrolysis of collagen. Gelatin is found in animal parts. It contains amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.

Gelatin is used to make the capsule-shaped tablets as its outer covering – gelcap.

2. Compression Coating Tablets

This involves the compaction of granular particles around a preformed tablet. It is done using special equipment via a dry process. This type of tablet coating is not as common as the other types. It consists of an internal core and an outer covering.

3. Film-Coated Tablets

Film coating is the most commonly used casing in the pharmaceutical industry today. This covering is used to improve the taste of the drug and for aesthetic purposes. Medicines, especially those gotten from herbal extracts, are not pleasing to the eyes. Thus, a covering is necessary for making the tablet look beautiful by using various colors.

In other cases, not all tablets require coating but a film to maintain its natural color. An even film around the tablet can be created by spraying.

4. Sugar Coated Tablets

Have you ever placed a tablet in your mouth and enjoyed its sweet outer covering and then feel an explosion of bitter taste in your mouth? That’s a sugar-coated tablet. Sugar-coated tablets offer a sweet coat majorly made from sucrose and polysaccharides to hide the bitter taste of the medicine.

This type of coating also gives off a sweet aroma, especially on foul-smelling drugs such as fish supplements. The layer causes the drug to become shiny and highly flavored.
5. Enteric Coated Tablets

The enteric coating gives a stomach acid-resistant coat for the drugs that have a constituent that is sensitive to acid. If the medicine is to be immersed in the small intestines, then the drug needs to be able to withstand stomach acid and get to the required area where it is immersed slowly where there is an absence of acidity. This type of medicine must not be chewed or crushed to avoid the risk of damage due to a reaction with stomach acid.

At AbbVie, we handle your product as our own. The nature of your biological drug notwithstanding, you can count on us for all your potent drug contract manufacturing needs. We will provide reliable and safe products that patients are ready to use.
